Coating an American Cherry Function Table for Coopers Brewery

The new Coopers Brewery Brand Home at Regency Park is a major hospitality and visitor destination designed by Studio Nine Architects, with interiors by Studio Gram. The development brings together a restaurant, bars, visitor spaces, microbrewery and whisky distillery within an architectural concept inspired by the familiar circular Coopers roundel. Timber plays an important role throughout the interior, working alongside concrete, stainless steel and copper to create a material palette that connects hospitality, manufacturing and the long history of the Coopers brand.

As part of the project, Remington Matters Furniture Design and Manufacturing produced extensive custom furniture for the venue, including a function table manufactured from American Cherry. Within an interior featuring substantial timber detailing and joinery, the coating requirement extended beyond simply protecting the surface. The finished table needed to sit comfortably within the broader material palette while providing a practical clear finish suited to its intended use.

Superior Timber Coatings worked with Remington Matters to select an Ilva single-pack water-based clear that functions as both sealer and topcoat. An important characteristic of the system is its ability to accommodate minor deformation in the timber surface. Where impacts dent the timber, the coating can flex with the localised movement rather than readily cracking or breaking away, helping the surface remain sealed. Successive coats build durability and an eggshell finish, while the option to spray, roll or brush provides additional application flexibility.

For a furniture manufacturer, a single-product sealer and topcoat system can simplify coating schedules and reduce the number of separate materials required through the finishing process. On the American Cherry function table, the selected approach provided a clear finished surface while allowing the natural character of the timber to remain central to the design. The project also demonstrates the importance of considering a coating as part of the wider architectural environment, particularly where individual furniture pieces must relate visually to extensive timber panelling, joinery and other finished surfaces throughout a venue.

Projects of this scale often require more than selecting a coating from a product list. Substrate species, application method, appearance, surrounding finishes and service requirements all need to be considered together. Superior Timber Coatings works with architects, designers, builders, furniture manufacturers, joiners and applicators to assess unusual coating challenges, test potential systems and help identify practical finishing solutions.
