This 1920s home featured original Baltic Pine floors marked by decades of wear. Darkened areas, uneven tone, and a heavy, dated look meant the timber no longer suited the light, relaxed interior being created. The structure was sound, but the surface needed a reset.
The brief was straightforward but exacting: brighten the space, retain the timber’s natural character, and deliver a finish that felt considered rather than overworked. The goal was a professional result without strong odours, specialised equipment, or complicated application steps.
The client was an experienced DIYer — confident with preparation and patient with process — but not interested in highly technical coating systems.
That made product choice critical. The system needed to be forgiving, predictable, and easy to apply with basic tools, while still delivering the look and performance expected from a professional floor finish. Long pot lives, strong odours, and multi-step sealing systems were off the table.
Water-based coatings were the clear direction. Fast drying, low odour, and easy clean-up meant the project could move quickly without disrupting the rest of the renovation or making the home unusable for days at a time.
The transformation began with Ilva Easystain 720 in Liming White, selected to soften and brighten the Baltic Pine without masking its grain.
Rather than creating a solid whitewashed effect, the liming stain settled into the timber naturally, lifting the tone while keeping variation and warmth intact. The result was a lighter, calmer floor that still felt honest to the age of the home.
This step alone changed how the space read. Hallways felt longer, rooms felt more open, and the floors stopped competing with the rest of the interior. Instead, they became the quiet base everything else could sit on.
Once stained, the floor was finished with Ilva Aquatech Water-Based 1K Clear, a combined sealer and topcoat designed for straightforward application.
Rolled on with ease, the coating levelled out cleanly without lap marks or heavy build. For a DIY application, that levelling behaviour is critical — it removes a lot of the stress that normally comes with floor finishing. Dry times were short, allowing work to continue without long delays between coats.
Underfoot, the result was noticeably different from older solvent systems. The finish felt soft and natural, retaining the tactile warmth of timber rather than sealing it under a hard, plastic surface. Importantly, the clear remained stable and resistant to yellowing, preserving the lighter tone achieved with the stain.
