This covered deck in Birkenhead is a strong example of how stepping away from glossy coatings can transform an outdoor space. Why the old finish failed
The previous coating relied on a surface film rather than penetrating the timber. Outdoors, timber is constantly exposed to UV radiation, moisture, and daily expansion and contraction. When a coating cannot move with the timber, failure is only a matter of time, often showing up as cracking, peeling, and flaking.
This type of deterioration is not unusual, particularly with traditional varnishes. Once breakdown begins, maintenance becomes labour-intensive and disruptive. Instead of enhancing the deck, the failing coating became a problem that needed to be stripped back before any meaningful improvement could be made.
Understanding matt finishes outdoors
There is no transparent exterior coating that will last forever. Pigment is essential because it reflects UV rays and slows the breakdown of both the coating and the timber beneath. Without sufficient pigment, degradation accelerates and maintenance cycles shorten — even with premium products.
That said, a heavily pigmented finish is not always required. Exposure plays a major role. Covered decks, like this one, experience far less direct weathering, which opens the door to lighter pigmentation. The key is selecting a penetrative coating that embeds into the timber rather than forming a brittle surface layer that will crack and peel.

For protection, the coating was still tinted, but not heavily. A subtle blend of black and white pigment was used to achieve a soft, weathered beach look while retaining the natural charm of the freshly sanded timber.
The result is an ultra-matt finish that feels modern and understated. The coating penetrates deeply, stabilising the timber while allowing it to move naturally.
